There are different types of backlinks in SEO. And it is very important to understand what are the types and their impact on your webpage. But first of all, we need to understand what is a backlink. Let’s go!
What is a Backlink in SEO?
Backlinks are just the links that we get from other websites. These are also known as inbound links or incoming links. Backlinks in SEO play a major role in telling the search engines that your website has useful content and should be ranked on top. In other words, these are online votes for a specific page of your website. Backlinks that are built comes under the Off-Page SEO activity.
More backlinks = more votes = more authority
Making SEO backlinks for your website isn’t the only thing that you have to worry about. You should also consider the different types of links in SEO along with the niche/relevancy of the website on which a backlink is built. Google and other major search engines can tell the quality of a website based on the quality of backlinks.
What is Link Juice in SEO?
When we make an SEO backlink, the value and equity of the referring website are passed to our page. That is known as Link Juice. Talking about link equity, it is usually estimated on various metrics such as trustworthiness, topic relevance, the authoritativeness of the website and type of backlink.
Types of Backlinks in SEO
Just like there are different types of SEO. Now is the time to discuss the different types of SEO backlinks that one can have. Let’s go!
A Dofollow link is just a default state for a link. If no attribute for the No-Follow link is given, it is a Do-follow link by default. This type of backlink can help improve your rankings on SERP because they pass value to your website.
How to Make a Do-Follow Link?
To make a do-follow link, just use the below link attributes in your webpage.
<a href="https://hostedlegit.com" rel="dofollow">Hosted Legit</a> OR <a href="https://hostedlegit.com">Hosted Legit</a>
Note: Both ways are perfect to create a D.F backlink.
A Nofollow attribute in a link tells search engines to ignore that link. They don’t pass any value from one website to another. Thus, they don’t help in improving your keyword rank or visibility.
Note: As of September 10, 2019, Google announced 2 new links attributes for classifying a nofollow link. These were:
- rel=”sponsored”: To be used in posts there is a part of advertisements, sponsorships or other compensation agreements.
- rel=”ugc”: UGC stands for User Generated Content, and it is to be used in links within user-generated content, such as comments on webpages and forum posts.
How to Make a No-Follow Link?
To make a no-follow SEO backlink, just use the below link attributes in your webpage.
<a rel="nofollow" href=”https://hostedlegit.com”>Hosted Legit</a>
Dofollow vs Nofollow SEO Backlinks
We just discussed the different types of backlinks in SEO. But do they provide the same value to our site? Let’s see!
Google takes Dofollow links into consideration in order to understand how really good the page is. The more DF links your site has, the more points you will get. The most common and best way to give the D.F link is to use the keyword as the anchor text. This can help you to improve keyword rankings on Google search results.
Now coming to the Nofollow backlinks, these don’t affect your rankings but are very good for maintaining a good & natural backlink profile. In today’s time, it is a must to have a normal SEO backlinks profile to avoid getting penalized by Google. Apart from this, you can also get a very large amount of traffic to your site if your NF link is on a popular site.
Last but not the least, an NF link can help you build authority for your website.
How to Check the SEO Backlink’s Type
There are different ways to check the type of backlink that is implemented on a site. These are:
Extensions – Extensions such as Moz and NoFollow Simple are used to check whether a link is do-follow or no-follow. Apart from these, there are many other SEO extensions for chrome that you can install and analyze backlinks.
For example, in the below screenshot, I used the Moz extension to check the type of link added on a page. The greenish (1st) denotes a D.F link and the pinkish (2nd) denotes an N.F link.
Manual – Many people still use this method. To check the type of a backlink manually, just right-click on a link and click on inspect element and you will see something like this –
As we discussed above, if a no-follow attribute is missing, it is a do-follow link by default.
So, this was about different types of links in SEO. Do comment and let me know what you feel about this article 🙂
